Transformation Meditation… Whatever things are of a good report.
When studying for this week’s Transformation Meditation topic on “Whatever Things Are of A Good Report.
I notice that some other translations of the bible used words like commendable, admirable and value in the place of “good report.”
I truly believe that to think on things that are commendable, and things that are admirable,
or to think about things that are of value are great thoughts to think on…
But, for some reason, my imagination is peaked a bit more when I read the phrase…
There are two great men of the bible that always comes to mind when I think about or meditate on things that are of a good report.
Can you guess who they are?
Well, beloved if you guessed that I’m talking about Joshua and Caleb you would be right.
What a fascinating story it is that we find in Numbers chapter 13 of our bibles.
Here’s a brief summary of what happened.
The story of 12 spies.
The intriguing story of the 12 spies is about how God commands Moses to send 12 leaders of every tribe into the promised land to let the children of Israel know what to expect when they got there.
Moses obeyed the Lord’s command and sent 1 man from each of the 12 tribes to spy out the land.
When the twelve men got to the land they saw that the land had everything that they would ever need or desire.
They even sneaked their way into the land to gather samples of the fruits to take back and show the nation of Israel the greatness of what they had discovered.
However, when the time came for them to give an assessment of what they had found…
10 of the spies brought back an evil report.
Only two of the men brought back a good report… and those men were Joshua of the tribe of Ephraim and Caleb of the tribe of Judah.
The report in which the other 10 spies brought back was so evil that it put fear in the hearts of the whole congregation of the Israelites.
The people were so fearful that they even wanted to take up stones and kill Caleb and Joshua for trying to encourage them to take possession of the land that the Lord had promised to them.
You can read all about it in Numbers 13 in your bible.
What’s A Good Report?
As I mentioned before, and I believe it was in the first episode of transformation meditation that only God the Holy Spirit could line up a thought process as we find in Philippians 4:8.
You see when we think about things that are true… It leads to thoughts that are just.
And our thoughts that are just…reveal the things that are honest.
The things that are honest are always things that are lovely… and our lovely thoughts produces in us a good report.
But you must know and keep in mind that…
Our World View Will Determine Our Report.
As followers of Christ, we must adopt a different view of the world around us than that of the skeptical unbeliever.
And the truth of the matter is that we can’t achieve this without first renewing our minds by the word of God. See Romans 12:1-2.
It is crucial that we as Christians learn to view the world from a biblical perspective.
What I mean is that we have to start seeing the world and our circumstances as God sees them.
This my beloved is not an easy task…especially with so many other philosophical world views bombarding and competing for our allegiance.
This is why my friend the Bible instructs us to guard our hearts with all diligence… because out of our hearts flows the issues of life. See Proverbs 4:23.
God is bigger and God is better than any circumstance or problem that any of us can ever face.
We must be careful of what we allow ourselves to attend too.
As the saying goes… When you put junk in… You can only get junk… out of it.
Guarding Our Hearts against The Junk.
So how do we guard our hearts and minds against the junk that the world wants us to consume?
Well, beloved, that’s a great question… But before I answer the question let me make something absolutely clear.
You see we have an adversary and he is non-other than Satan…
He wants to steal everything that our heavenly Father has purposed for us as followers of Christ.
He wants to destroy our fellowship with our Savior by making us fall into doubt and unbelief.
The enemy of our souls is just that… the enemy. And if he could kill us all he would do it in a split second.
Now, back to the guarding of our hearts against the junk.
Our best defense against the wiles and schemes of the enemy is the word of God.
If we are going to have any chance of combating the ills and evil reports that we are so inundated by…beloved we must saturate ourselves with the word of God.
The bible tells us that if we are believers and followers of the Lord Jesus that we have the mind of Christ. See 1 Corinthians 2:16.
How is it that we can have the mind of Christ?
That… my friend… is the million dollar question.
One might ask him or herself this question… and it may be this…
If I have the mind of Christ why don’t I think or act like Christ?
And to be quite honest it’s a question that I also asked myself for a long time before I discovered the truth about the matter.
So, let me give you the simple answer to that puzzling question.
When the bible tells us that we have the mind of Christ… Could it be as simple as having access to a bible?
Meditate on that for a little while…
A Good Report is Hard to Come By.
It seems as though everywhere we turn…we get a dose of bad news.
When we partake of our local broadcast of the news… all we hear about is mischief and chaos.
There are very few human interest reports that are being reported on the local news… You know what I mean… the kind of report that will inspire hope and instill some type of encouragement in us.
The bible tells us that faith comes by hearing… Romans 10:17.
So, think about this with me for a moment…
If faith comes by hearing…doesn’t it stand to reason that the things that we allow into our hearing more abundantly — will have the greatest impact on our beliefs and thoughts?
I’m not sure if you have noticed this or not… But it seems to me like more folks put there trust in the local news above what God says in his word.
And it’s no wonder because most of us… and even us Christians watch the local news and everything else more than we read and study our Bibles.
A Good Report Comes From God.
If any of us wish to have a good report or think about good things we have to start with being more attentive to the things of God.
Just as Joshua and Caleb had a good report to take back to the children of Israel…so are we to have for one another.
But this can only take place if we are saturated with the word and of the things of God.
The bible tells us in 1st Peter 3:10 these words…
For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:
But, do you see my friend… that when we align our thoughts and speech with what the word of God says… that it produces good things?
A great example of getting what comes out of our mouths is found in Numbers 13:28.
This is what the Lord instructs Moses to tell the congregation after hearing them murmur and complain all through the night long.
Say to them, ‘As I live, says the LORD, I will surely do to you just what you have spoken in my hearing.
Also, we find these words in the epistle to the Galatians 6:7.
Do not be deceived. God will not be made a fool. For a person will reap what he sows.
Beloved our words are just like seeds that a farmer would plant into the ground.
When we speak we are planting seeds into our lives… so to speak.
The Tongue is the pen of a writer… And It Determines What We Live.
If you, and I don’t fill our hearts and minds with the living and prosperous word of God…
Let me put it another way, that it may sink deep down into your heart.
If you or I don’t fill our hearts and minds with the true… The just… Honest… The pure… And the lovely things of God that are found and prescribed in his living word…
You nor I will have the ability to think good things nor speak them out of our mouths.
Listen, my beloved friend, I know all of that may be a lot to take in… Nevertheless, it’s a truth that we must deal with appropriately.
Let me take you to the words of our Lord Jesus.
Jesus teaches us that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth shall speak.
He also said that out of a good heart flows good things and out of an evil heart comes only evil things…
In Luke 6:45 the words of Jesus reads like this…
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good;
and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil:
for of the abundance of the heart, his mouth speaks.
So, in plain old English that just means that what’s in us… is coming out of us.
Yet there’s another part to that which is in us is coming out of us… and it’s something that most of us as Christians don’t seem to get.
And it’s the part that we get what we say…
There are numerous verses of scripture throughout the word of God telling us this very thing.
For example… Here’s one of my favorite verses pertaining to the subject.
Proverbs 21:23… reads this way…
He who keeps watch over his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles.
Or how about this one…
A man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.
The Easy English version of the Bible puts it this way…
” You have to live with the result of the words that you speak.”
Beloved, I don’t think it can be made any clearer to us than that.
didn’t God promise us that his word would not return to him void?
And in another place, he promises to watch over his word to perform it.
As we wrap up this weeks lecture on the good report… I wish to leave you with a few practical steps that you, and I… can take to stay in agreement with God.
As I said before all good things come from God. And truly the essence of a good report begins with aligning our thoughts and speech with that of our Holy and Wise Father in heaven.
Keeping A Good Report.
Tip #1… We must fill our hearts and minds with the word of God.
Tip #2… We must meditate on the word of God and commit it to memory.
When we fill our hearts and minds with… meditate and commit the word of God to memory it gives the Holy Spirit something to work with.
Then the scripture can be fulfilled in us that we find in the Gospel of John 14:26.
I’m sure you have heard me quote it before. But nevertheless, here it is again…
But the Comforter, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things… and bring to remembrance whatsoever I have said unto you.
Tip #3… Do your best to watch less of the local news or any news… for that matter…
Beloved the local news is filled with evil reports…
And as faith comes by hearing… We as humans have a tendency to put more faith in the things that we attend to the most…
Tip #4… We must get a hold of our tongues and start saying what thus saith The Lord.
We must start confessing victory and not defeat… We must sow seeds that produce a good harvest and not that of an evil crop.
Yes, we must keep guard over our tongues… Or better yet we need to surrender our tongues over to God and allow the Holy Spirit to tame them.
Tip #5… We must also guard our hearts and minds as the bible tells us to.
The most practical way to explain this type of guarding is to simply instruct you to be careful of what you are looking at…
and also just as important…
be careful of what you are allowing into your hearing.
Tip #6… Think good thoughts and remember that good thought comes from God.
Tip #7… As I stated earlier… God is bigger and better than our circumstances or problems and we must remember to always exalt him as such… as he… is.
Well, beloved that’s going to do it for this weeks lecture for Transformation Meditation of…
Whatever things that are of a good report.
But as always…
Keep up the good practice… and experience the power of God…
working to give you a new life through meditation.
