When the thought came to me about why we should meditate as Christian believers and followers of Christ…seven reasons came to mind.
But of course, there are truly a whole lot more than 7 reasons that we should make meditation a daily and lifestyle practice. And all of those reasons to meditate can be found on just about every one of the pages of the Bible if your eyes are open to them.
I’ll tell you why I say a reason to meditate can be found on every page of the Bible in a moment… but for now, let me show you the seven (7) reasons that I am talking about first.
The first reason to meditate you will find in the Book of Joshua 1:8
Here are the words to that verse…
This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate therein day and night, that you should observe to do all that is written therein; for then shall you make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success.
The word law in this passage actually sums up one reason why we should meditate.
Human beings don’t usually like laws per se. But laws are needed for mankind in every culture and society.
If we didn’t have laws the world around us would be in a lot worse shape than it is today.
When God tells us that his book of the law shall not depart out of our mouths… He means that we should never stop talking about it among ourselves as his children.
When he tells us to meditate in it day and night…by doing so we will always keep it in the forefront of our minds.
If we do this we will always know the wisdom of God and have a word in every situation we find ourselves in.
No matter what it may be that we are facing we will always have a word of correction, encouragement, exhortation, and comfort to help in our time of need.
Now, I say all of that to say this… The first and foremost reason to meditate is that God commands it.
After all isn’t it written in his book of the law?
The second or number 2 reason to meditate.
I have already touched on the second reason why we as Christians should meditate, but I will say it again.
If we do as God tells us to do and meditate in the word day and night we will always have the word speaking to us.
This allows us to know what to do, we will also know what to say, and the word gives us instructions on which way to go when we are faced with challenges.
Which brings us to…
The Third Remarkable Reason for Meditation.
God tells us also that by the meditation of his word we will observe to do all that is written in the word of truth.
You see the Bible is not like any other book on the face of the earth.
The Bible is the only book on earth that makes the claim that the words on the pages gives life and restore our souls.
So, you see as we read it and study it… It transforms our way of thinking and ultimately our behavior.
As our behavior begins to be conformed to the ways of God this will automatically set us on a course for…
A Prosperous New Life… The Fourth Reason for Meditation.
If you or I were to ask any man or woman or boy or girl for that matter what they wanted out of life, there’s a good chance that they would say… To be prosperous.
We all would like to be prosperous, but most of us don’t want to put the hard work in to get it.
Prosperity comes in many shapes and sizes and the Word of God has all the bases covered.
God promises that if we meditate on his word day and night that we would make our way prosperous. I believe him…
The thing to understand about prosperous living God’s way is that it’s like planting a seed in the ground and meditation is the water that helps it grow.
Now We Get to The Fifth Reason for Meditation God’s Way.
God not only promises success, but he promises that if we meditate on the word and observe to do all of it… We will have “good success.”
The way I see it is that success and good success are on two different levels.
Good success is that extraordinary success that comes with the abundant living that only God can provide.
We can be successful at many things but that doesn’t mean that is a “good success.“
When I think about good success… I think about the Gospel of Christ aka The Good News.
The Bible teaches us that Jesus went around doing good to and for all that he came into contact with. Acts 10:38
I believe with all my heart that this is the primary type of good success that God wants us to be a part of.
We are blessed to be a blessing to others and that’s what prosperous and successful living really looks like. Genesis 12:2-3
Number 6 Expresses The Beauty Of Christian Meditation
It’s amazing to me how the previous 5 reasons to meditate as Christian Believers all came out of 1 verse of scripture.
That’s only one aspect of the beauty found in practicing meditation as a Christian.
I mentioned earlier that I would let you in on why there’s a reason to meditate found on just about every page of our Bible.
Well Joshua 1: 8 is a prime example of what I am talking about.
You see just as we discovered 5 reasons to meditate in that verse, we can also find a reason and a purpose for meditative thought on every other page of God’s holy book.
The Bible is full of instructions for living the abundant life that Jesus came to give us. John 10:10
Jesus also told us that if we had the faith as small as a grain of a mustard seed. That we could speak to the mountain and move it out of the way.
He also said that the mustard seed was the smallest among all seeds, but when it grows it gets bigger than all the other trees around it.
Meditation is the water to our faith and meditation will help us to cultivate every area of our lives as followers of Christ.
But that’s not all though, because the 7th reason to meditate is that…
The Ultimate Beauty Is Discovered When We Meditate.
The ultimate reason to meditate is God himself…
There’s nothing to be compared to the beauty of God’s Holiness and the experience of being in his presence.
Intimacy with God is what our hearts long for and you and I can only experience the deeper levels of intimacy with God through Christian or Biblical Meditations.
I read somewhere that meditation works even if you don’t believe in a particular religious sect or subscribe to a certain group or lifestyle.
That’s probably true to life… But this I can promise and it is that if God is not involved in your meditation practices you are missing out on the ultimate beauty in meditation.
So, it’s like this… God instructed Joshua to meditate on his word day and night and he is telling us to do the same.
When we do this not only will we become wiser in the things of God…we also get to know and experience Him
and His presence on a much deeper and intimate level.
My friend this is what will cause you to want to meditate day and night and you will definitely delight yourself in the LORD!
Let This Mind Be In You
The Scripture instructs us in Philippians 2:5 to let this mind be in us which was also in Christ…
In another place, it tells us that we have the mind of Christ 1st Corinthians 2:16.
If you are a new Christian you may be thinking how can this be?
Well, think of it this way…
The Bible is a book of prophecy and they are prophecies that have been fulfilled and prophecy that is yet to be fulfilled.
The prophecies that are yet to be fulfilled is where you and I fit into the equation… so to speak.
What I mean in simpler terms is that God speaks to us about our past, our present and our prophetic future.
So, if you wish to gain insight on your past, present and prophetic future… Follow God’s instructions and meditate.
